The platform allows users to buy and sell shares listed on the NSE directly from their mobile phones, marking a major step toward expanding access to Kenya’s capital markets.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto described Ziidi Trader as a transformational tool for financial inclusion. He said the platform would empower ordinary Kenyans to participate in wealth creation by making stock market investment simple, affordable, and accessible. The President encouraged small-scale traders, including mama mbogas and boda-boda operators, to embrace the opportunity and invest in local companies through regulated channels.
“This innovation brings the stock market closer to the people,” Ruto said, adding that it supports the government’s agenda of promoting savings, investment, and economic growth.
Safaricom Chief Executive Officer highlighted that Ziidi Trader leverages the wide reach of M-PESA to remove long-standing barriers to share trading. Users can now invest without opening traditional Central Depository System (CDS) accounts, a process that has often discouraged first-time investors. The service is designed to offer a seamless experience similar to other everyday mobile money transactions.
NSE officials welcomed the initiative, saying it is expected to boost retail investor participation and deepen market activity. Analysts believe the platform could attract millions of new investors and strengthen confidence in Kenya’s capital markets.
The launch of Ziidi Trader underscores the growing role of digital innovation in shaping the country’s financial future and expanding opportunities for all citizens.
