Gikomba Market Set for Major Redevelopment under Nairobi River Regeneration Program

Speaking on the initiative, PS Charles Hinga of the State Department for Housing and Urban Development said the project aims to restore safety, dignity, and opportunity for thousands of traders while reviving the Nairobi River corridor.
“Gikomba Market is a critical national economic hub, with over 200,000 traders,” PS Hinga noted. “This redevelopment is about structured, modern spaces that address persistent challenges such as flooding, fire outbreaks, and poor waste management.”
The Nairobi County Government has welcomed the project. “We are committed to supporting this initiative, ensuring that road networks, drainage, and other infrastructure complement the market’s modernization,” said a county spokesperson. “A well-organized market will improve accessibility, attract more customers, and create a safer environment for all.”
Traders have also expressed optimism about the changes. Gikomba Traders Chairman, Mr. James Mwangi, praised the government’s engagement. “Our members are at the heart of this project. The new market will not only secure our livelihoods but also enhance working conditions, with proper sanitation, cold storage, and designated trading spaces,” he said.
The redevelopment is being implemented in phases, with affected traders voluntarily relocating to decanting sites to minimize disruption. PS Hinga emphasized that the welfare of traders remains the top priority, and the project will include modern amenities such as toilets, washing areas, reliable water and electricity, fire safety equipment, walkways, and inclusive designs for persons with disabilities.
