Kenya Strengthens Regional Ties with Landmark SGR Extension
Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to regional integration and infrastructure development following the groundbreaking ceremony of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Narok to Malaba.
Speaking during the event, Abdi Duale, in his capacity as Chairman of Kenya Railways Corporation, emphasized the importance of the project in transforming transport and boosting economic growth across the region.
Government officials highlighted the strong and longstanding relationship between Kenya and Uganda, noting that continued cooperation has driven shared progress within the East African Community (EAC). The new railway project is expected to further strengthen these ties by enhancing cross-border trade and improving regional connectivity.
The government underscored that the Narok–Malaba SGR line is a key pillar of its broader infrastructure agenda, building on the existing railway network linking the coast to Nairobi. The upgraded system will improve efficiency, expand transport capacity, and support the seamless movement of goods and people.
Kenya Railways Corporation also announced plans to develop inland container depots and modern freight facilities along the corridor. These developments are aimed at easing cargo movement from the port and enhancing the overall logistics chain, benefiting both large-scale industries and small businesses by reducing transport costs and increasing market access.
For the East African region, the project is expected to significantly reduce transit time between Kenya and Uganda, creating a more reliable and cost-effective transport corridor for landlocked countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan. It will also strengthen regional supply chains, promote investment, and support the free movement of goods across borders.
In Kenya’s western region, counties along the railway corridor are poised for major economic transformation. The project is expected to open up new markets for agricultural produce, stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities, and accelerate urban development. Improved infrastructure will also lower the cost of doing business and attract investors to emerging towns along the route.
Leaders at the ceremony emphasized that railway infrastructure remains a critical driver of economic transformation, connecting communities and unlocking new opportunities in previously underserved areas.
The Narok–Malaba SGR extension is set to play a pivotal role in linking Kenya to Uganda and the wider East African region, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward deeper regional integration and sustainable economic growth.
