This presents a great opportunity to educate people about the incredible life that exists beneath the water and the important roles these organisms play in keeping rivers healthy. These ecosystems help maintain flowing rivers and provide water, plants, and fish that many communities depend on. This is why we must conserve river ecosystems that provide such essential services.
Research plays a crucial role in conservation. Good conservation is underpinned by good research. To effectively conserve an ecosystem, we must first understand how it works, what threats it faces, and what challenges must be addressed. We also need to identify the actions required to protect it. Achieving this understanding requires strong research, which often takes time.
Therefore, it is important to secure funding that supports both the research behind conservation efforts and the implementation of conservation actions once the findings are available.
Kenya and Tanzania both have very progressive water laws that call for the protection of environmental flows needed to sustain healthy river ecosystems. Over the past 15 years, part of our work has focused on understanding how much water rivers such as the Mara River and its tributaries require to remain healthy. Now it is up to the responsible agencies in Kenya and Tanzania to manage these water flows properly to ensure that the rivers continue to flow and support life well into the future
