At the official launch of Mizizi Elimu Afrika’s 2040 strategy and new brand identity, former board member Dr. Sarah Ruto delivered a powerful and uplifting address, calling on civil society, government, innovators, and citizens to unite behind a shared vision for educational transformation across the continent.

Mizizi Elimu Afrika — the new name and brand of what was previously known as Zizi Afrique Foundation — embodies Africa’s roots and commitment to foundational learning. The word “Mizizi”, meaning “roots” in Swahili, was chosen to reflect the organisation’s African identity, long-term ambition, and deep commitment to systems change in education through 2040. The brand refresh is part of a bold strategic repositioning that places the organisation as a backbone and catalyst for systems-level collaboration in early childhood development and educational access across Africa.

In her remarks, Dr. Ruto acknowledged the team’s bold vision to move beyond traditional NGO roles. “This work cannot simply be done by NGOs working on the side, but by NGOs collaborating together,” she said, commending the organisation for intentionally engaging with government and partners as a system anchor, regardless of formal invitations.

She also thanked the government representatives in attendance, noting that their presence signals shared mission and mutual commitment. “No one can work alone,” Dr. Ruto emphasized. “We must continue bringing together other organisations, individuals, and innovators so that we can collaborate and achieve more together.”

Invoking the metaphor of collective movement, she likened their journey to “many birds flying in the same direction,” echoing the proverb “birds of a feather flock together.” Drawing inspiration from Eliud Kipchoge, she quoted: “100% of me is nothing compared to 10% of the team,” illustrating how even modest contributions from many can yield transformative collective impact.

Dr. Ruto concluded with heartfelt gratitude — thanking the team for the honour of serving with them and the attendees for their support. With a warm smile, she added, “I will now try to learn more from Gen Z — I’m still catching up!”

Her speech set a collaborative tone for Mizizi Elimu Afrika’s next chapter, as the organisation seeks to build stronger partnerships and shared ownership of its Vision 2040 agenda — a journey that Dr. Ruto described not as the work of one, but the achievement of.
