John Mwaura has formally accepted his nomination as the Democratic Change Party (DCP) candidate for Kiambu County, delivering a strong message centered on equity, leadership accountability, and urgent socio-economic reforms.
Speaking during the acceptance, Mwaura framed his candidacy not merely as a political step, but as part of a broader movement for change. He emphasized that Kiambu, despite its economic strength and strategic position within Kenya’s development landscape, has failed to fully translate its potential into improved livelihoods for its residents.
“Kiambu is not living up to its full potential—and the reason is leadership,” he stated, pointing to systemic challenges that continue to affect ordinary citizens.
The county, home to over 2.8 million people and a key contributor to the national economy, boasts strong sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, services, and real estate. However, Mwaura noted a stark contradiction between this economic strength and the daily struggles faced by many residents.
He raised concerns about disparities in resource allocation, arguing that Kiambu has historically received less compared to neighboring Nairobi despite its significant contribution to the national GDP. According to him, this imbalance undermines the spirit of devolution, which was intended to ensure equitable development across counties.
Mwaura also highlighted pressing social issues, including unemployment among youth, financial strain on families, and the challenges facing farmers. He painted a picture of a hardworking population that remains underserved, calling for policies that prioritize inclusivity and shared prosperity.
Healthcare emerged as a central pillar of his agenda. He criticized the current state of health services, describing a system where uncertainty and inadequacy continue to affect access to care. He stressed the need for well-equipped facilities, supported medical personnel, and a system that guarantees dignity for every patient.
“Healthcare is not a privilege. It is a basic right,” he affirmed, underscoring the urgency of reform in the sector.
Infrastructure development, particularly road networks, also featured prominently in his remarks, with Mwaura calling for improved connectivity to support economic growth and ease access to essential services.
In his closing remarks, Mwaura challenged residents to reflect on the county’s direction and make a deliberate choice toward transformation. He urged unity and collective action, positioning his campaign as a platform for building a fairer and more inclusive Kiambu.
His acceptance marks the beginning of what is expected to be a closely watched political contest, with his message resonating strongly on themes of justice, equality, and accountable leadership.
