Over KSh 30 Billion Committed as NPS Officers Join Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund
Story by Ayubu John photo journalist Afrimedia news.Nairobi, Kenya – Officers from the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) have officially been onboarded to the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund under the Social Health Insurance (SHA) framework, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s public service healthcare reforms.
Over KSh 30 Billion Committed as NPS Officers Join Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund
Amos Njoroge Gathecha, EBS, Deputy Head of Public Service, highlighted that the journey began in 2023 with the enactment of the Social Health Insurance Act, which replaced NHIF coverage for civil servants. “Our immediate concern was transitioning civil servants into a system that provides focused and specialized healthcare coverage,” Gathecha said.
The Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund, established under the National Treasury, initially covered civil servants and later teachers under the Teachers Service Commission. “By 1st December last year, we had successfully onboarded teachers, and yesterday, we marked another milestone by onboarding officers from the police and prison services,” he added.
Gathecha confirmed that over KSh 30 billion has been committed to the scheme: KSh 6.1 billion for civil servants, KSh 15 billion for teachers, and KSh 8.7 billion for police and prison officers. He emphasized that benefits are comparable to previous schemes, while efforts continue to standardize coverage across all public officers.
Reflecting on his personal experience with police officers in Garissa, Gathecha said the milestone was deeply personal. He also affirmed that lessons from earlier transitions have given the team confidence that the SHA system “will work, and indeed, it must work.”
The onboarding represents a significant step toward equitable, standardized healthcare for all public officers, fulfilling both policy and constitutional mandates
