Story:
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the escalating global food crisis, outlining a series of policy and institutional interventions aimed at safeguarding food security and stabilizing the economy.
Speaking during a high-level press conference, a senior government official from the technical leadership team emphasized that the current food crisis is a result of multiple global shocks, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, volatility in global energy markets, and ongoing geopolitical tensions that have disrupted supply chains worldwide.
The official noted that these overlapping crises have exerted significant pressure on food systems, particularly in developing economies such as Kenya, where rising costs of production and importation continue to affect the affordability and accessibility of essential commodities.
“As you are aware, His Excellency the President will shortly provide the official government position and policy direction. My role is to complement that by highlighting the practical and institutional measures we are undertaking,” the official stated.
The government, under the leadership of UDA, has implemented targeted interventions designed to cushion citizens from the adverse effects of rising global food prices. These include regulatory adjustments, strategic subsidies, and strengthened partnerships with both local and international stakeholders.
According to the official, these measures are anchored on key principles of solidarity, resilience, and responsible governance, aimed at protecting livelihoods while maintaining macroeconomic stability.
The address also underscored the importance of international cooperation in tackling the crisis. Representatives from key global partners, including the United States and the United Kingdom, were acknowledged for their continued support, alongside other development partners engaged in strengthening food systems.
“No country can resolve this crisis in isolation. It requires coordinated global action, knowledge-sharing, and fair trade practices that promote sustainability,” the official said.
From a technical perspective, the government is prioritizing improvements in agricultural productivity, strengthening supply chain systems, and enforcing quality standards to prevent the infiltration of substandard food products in the market.
Additionally, efforts are underway to seal regulatory gaps and enhance enforcement mechanisms to ensure market integrity and consumer protection.
The government also revealed that it is continuously reviewing its policies to align with emerging global and domestic realities. This process includes stakeholder consultations, real-time market monitoring, and benchmarking against international best practices.
While acknowledging the magnitude of the challenges, the UDA administration expressed optimism that the crisis presents an opportunity to reform and modernize Kenya’s food systems.
“This is a moment for us to rethink our approach, strengthen our institutions, and build a more resilient and sustainable future for our country,” the official concluded.
The President is expected to issue a comprehensive policy statement outlining further measures to address the crisis and guide the country’s long-term food security strategy.
