IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon Unveils Reform Agenda Ahead of 2027 General Election
Erastus Edung Ethekon has reaffirmed the commitment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to deliver a transparent, credible, and inclusive 2027 General Election through institutional reforms, stakeholder engagement, and operational preparedness.
Speaking during the validation forum for the Commission’s Third Strategic Plan 2024–2029 and the Election Operation Plan 2025–2027, Ethekon emphasized the critical role stakeholders play in strengthening Kenya’s democracy and restoring public confidence in electoral processes.
“I sincerely express my appreciation for your continued partnership and support to the Commission. Your presence here today affirms our shared commitment to credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral processes,” said Ethekon.
The IEBC chair noted that the Commission’s new strategic roadmap is anchored on four key result areas: managing elections, citizen engagement and participation, equitable representation, and institutional capacity.
According to Ethekon, the plans are designed to guide reforms and operational activities leading up to the 2027 General Election, with emphasis placed on voter registration, voter education, staff training, technology deployment, and efficient election management.
He revealed that the Commission had already recorded major milestones under the newly constituted team, including the successful conduct of by-elections in November 2025 and February 2026, which helped refine operational systems and strengthen preparedness for future polls.
Ethekon further disclosed that the recently concluded enhanced continuous voter registration exercise achieved 94 percent of its target, describing the outcome as evidence of growing public participation in democratic processes.
The IEBC chair also confirmed that preparations for the constitutionally mandated boundary delimitation exercise are underway through what he termed a transparent and consultative multi-approach process.
“We remain fully committed to delivering an election that is peaceful, credible, transparent, verifiable, inclusive, and efficient,” Ethekon said.
He urged stakeholders to actively participate in reviewing the strategic documents and submit evidence-based recommendations to help shape the Commission’s final roadmap ahead of the 2027 polls.
