Ndindi Nyoro Proposes KSh48 Billion Plan to Lower Fuel Prices
has called for urgent government intervention to lower fuel prices, warning that rising costs are pushing Kenyans into deeper economic hardship.
Speaking before Parliament, Nyoro argued that the current increase in global oil prices is temporary and should not force Kenya into long-term economic suffering. He noted that inflation is expected to rise above 7.5 percent, while transport fares and the cost of living continue to soar across the country.
The legislator revealed that taxes and levies account for a large portion of fuel prices in Kenya, saying the government still has room to cushion consumers. He proposed a series of temporary measures aimed at reducing pump prices over the next six months.

Among the proposals are reducing profit margins for oil importers and dealers by KSh4 per litre, suspending VAT on fuel products, lowering the Road Maintenance Levy Fund charges, and increasing subsidies through the Fuel Stabilization Fund.
Nyoro said the intervention package would cost about KSh48 billion but insisted it was necessary to protect Kenyans and stabilize the economy.

The MP further argued that Parliament exists to respond to emergencies and changing economic situations, adding that Kenya has previously operated under lower fuel taxes and levies, making the proposals practical and achievable.
